Born in Srednick, Lithuania in 1889, Joseph David Aronson emigrated with his family to the United States in 1891. He earned his M.D. at the Medico-Chirurgical College of Philadelphia in 1908, then taught pathology and bacteriology at his alma mater and the University of Arkansas. After World War I, Aronson joined the Henry Phipps Institute for the Prevention and Treatment of Tuberculosis at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.
